Once you’ve chosen the dress you want to wear for your wedding, there a few steps that you can take to elevate your perfect fit. We’re talking about alterations, of course. While New York City Bride may be online, we’re dedicated to making sure our brides are taken care of from when you pick your dress, until you wear it down the aisle.
Although we currently don’t offer in-person fittings, our staff at New York City Bride is trained to assist you with taking your own measurements, provide size recommendations, and offer you a variety of options for custom sizing, if needed. Please continue reading below to find out about the most common wedding dresses alterations you should know about before purchasing your gown!
Top Bridal Gown Alterations You Need To Know
Before you purchase and start altering your bridal dress, take some time to find out your measurements and determine your actual size. You can learn how to take your own bust, waist, hips, and sleeve measurements at home by watching our instructional video here. You can also visit our size page here for detailed listings of dress sizes from our wedding gown designers, as the sizes may vary.
If you chose to have your measurements taken by a tailor, you could expect to pay between $15 and $20, depending on the shop you chose. For help finding an alternation shop near you, click here for our shop recommendations. Or, if there are currently no shops listed for your area, you can send a request to our staff here and we’ll assist you in finding an alteration shop near you. Taking your measurements before purchasing your wedding gown helps to ensure a proper fit and cut down on additional alteration costs later on.
1. Heightened Hems
At the very least, most bridal gowns are going to require some form of hem alteration, whether it’s a minor trim or something a bit more drastic. Rather than paying extra costs for alterations, you can contact us before you purchase your dress, and we’ll customize the length of your gown for no additional charge before it’s shipped.
2. Bust, Waist, Hips, & Sleeves
After the hem, the most common alterations to consider are the bust, waist, hips, and sleeves. Together, these four measurements make up the overall shape of your wedding gown. And while a few centimeters here and there may not seem like much, it can make all the difference in how your dress looks and feels.
New York City Bride Tip: Wear your wedding shoes, bra, and panties when you take your measurements or attend a fitting. Don’t forget to bring your reception shoes along, as well, as your dress is adjusted to your height in your wedding shoes; so if you try to pop on a pair of sandals, you may end up dragging your dress around your ankles for the evening.
3. Extra Bits & Bobs
At New York City Bride, we offer some light design changes for an additional charge including changing the neckline or adding a lining to your dress. Other alterations you may want to consider are:
- adding a waist stay to prevent your dress from slipping
- switching the closure type for better convenience
- changing the back of your dress to be more or less revealing
- adding a lace or bead appliques
